WoW!

That’s right. I started playing WoW. For those who might now know what it stands for, it means World of Warcraft. A MMORPG that came out in 2004. I currently have a Level 70 Ret Paladin Spec and thinking of changing it to either Prot or Holy. I’ve pre-ordered Litch King and will be leveling my character to 80 with my roommate. haha

Maybe create a Death Knight character afterwards, who knows. It’s a fairly decent game that deals with alot of social interaction (yes, i know you can do that in real life, but i bet you can’t cast magical spells with your hands in real life, or weld a huge ass sword, axe or mace without getting into some sort of legal trouble. :p )

I’ve been playing it quite often now since in residence there is usually nothing to do. So this game is more of a time killer. If i find something better to do then I wont play WoW (no, homework unfortunately is not something I would classify as something better to do. lol)

People really fall for stuff like this? WOW!

Got an email today, “supposedly” from the PayPal Security Team. Looks all professional and all. Except for 2 things I noticed right off the bat. The link they provided and the email address it was sent from.

The link doesn’t even say paypal in it yet alone anything related to paypal. I havent clicked on the link yet so I dont know how the website would look like. I would assume it would look like paypal’s login screen.

The email it’s sent from. I am pretty sure they dont use a yahoo adress to send stuff this important to their clients. At least the really tricky ones would make it look like it a paypal email. This one just flat out sucks.

Paypal Phishing at it's finest.

Remote Desktop Support

Today I helped a friend of a friend with a computer issue they were having. Having almost ran out of options I remembered a cool utility I’ve been meaning to try out. It’s called logmein rescue. It’s an application that allows other users who needs computer problem to download the client app and directly connect you to me so I can help you, if I am online and available to give support.

I have decided to devote some of my time to helping people in need (computer issues only please. hehe) but this is simply an experiment hopefully it will succeed and I can make a little revenue off this experiment. Right now it’s free of charge, but donations as always are highly appreciated. I currently offer support on Windows based machines as well as Mac OSX based if necessary.

If you need computer help it’s as easy as filling out the form in the sidebar. If I’m not online you will be directed to the offline page. Unfortunately, since it’s a 1 man team right now I will be hard to coordinate a solid time table on when I can help and when I will be unavailable to help. But during the times I’m in from of my computer I will try my best to help. Private sessions are also available. Just drop by an email and I will get back with a set time period.

Dual Display on Vista

There seems to be spreading an issue of running dual display under vista which has been causing alot of problems for alot of users. Since this seems to affect both nvidia and ati users, I’m not going to specifically point fingers, but I am using an ati video card at the moment.

The issue of running dual display under vista is, it crashes the system, sometimes it would work fine. The Video Processing Unit (VPU) would randomly stop responding triggering a VPU recovery to attempt to restart the service. Normally this would solve the problem, but at times it would go through the VPU recovery cycle 4-5 times before the operating system finally giving up and fail completely with a blue screen, hence crashing the user’s system.

I haven’t used a nvidia card for a while now so I don’t know when this problem started for them (driver version wise) but on the ati side the problem has been present since theirt Catalyst version 7.7 which was released last year in July. So it’s been well over a year and the current driver version, 8.9, still experiences this issue.

This made me come to a conclusion that either the graphics company just simply don’t care about this issue and that it’s not a big deal to them to even bother trying to fix it. OR they have tried and there’s nothing they can do about it and that the problem lies with Microsoft and that THEY are too lazy or dont care about fixing this issue. Either way, this problem has been persisting for far to long now.

The weird thing about it is, this issue seems to only happen from a cold boot or a restart triggered by applications that require restarting after installation or windows update. If I do another restart right after windows restarts. The video card doesn’t do the whole VPU recover thing. Also, this seems to happen when I’m on desktop using normal applications like firefox and itunes. Not those killer 3d games or benchmarking software. Just normal desktop applications. My video card is ATI Radeon HD2900XT running at stock speeds and using the stock cooler. The temperature is 69 degrees, I think its a little high but the graphics processor is designed to withstand hotter temperatures than that.

I did a little research on this issue on Google and found that quite a few forums also has topics about this and I am not the only one that’s suffering from this problem. The problem only affects people running dual display. As much as I hate this problem, I also don’t want to have to ditch the second monitor and go back to single display since I got too used to using dual displays. Switching back would be weird and hard.

Windowblinds hates me, me thinks.

I have used windowblinds for my XP system in the past but had yet to use it since upgrading it to Vista. This was like over 2 years ago.

So today I decided to use Windowblinds again, instead of installing it on my main machine. I thought I’d use it on my XP parallels partition. There’s no reason for it as to why it’s not working. but with my luck. It refuses to work. So I finally gave up completely and uninstalled it. It’s running XP Service Pack 3. And I installed the trial version of Windowblinds. And a good call at that. Otherwise I would have really been pissed off. Paid 20+ for a software that refuses to run on my virtual environment. unacceptable. :p

Windowblinds. You have failed me for the last time!

Heres the problem. I installed. It installed, it told me to reboot. I clicked yes, it rebooted. It loaded windows, I log in. All the startup applications run. But wait! Windowblinds pops up a message. A reboot is required! (thought I just rebooted), okay. I’ll reboot again. same processor. log off, restarted, log in. Windowblinds pops up again. You need to reboot your machine! and the cycle continues. windowblinds claims i need to reboot after i finished rebooting back into the system. I did this cycle maybe 5-10 times, cause theres nothing really to do here right now. lol but yea. I eventually gave up on that and said to hell with Windowblinds.

I just felt like posting this. Probably will catch the attention of a specific person I shall remain nameless (but you know who you are. ;) )

Spore

I bought it! lol. The galactic edition which turned out to be quite expensive but well worth it. The case is made of plastic and the design look pretty cool. haha

The installation took around 10-15 minutes and once it finished installing, I was playing the game. Started out as a little tiny microbe the evolved into a fish of some sort, later into a land creature. Afterward, my creature started its own tribe, allying with other tribes and it evolved into a City. Now I’m just starting Space travel.

Bought this game at around 4PM yesterday. started playing it at around 5 and didnt stop till 2AM. :S Kinda lost track of time. Luckly my class today is at 12:40 and I still got a decent amount of sleep :)

But the game is quite fun actually. Wasn’t what I was expecting, and well worth it. Everyone should give this game a try. Even the non gamers.

Waiting paitently in class

This willbe a short post as well as my first official post using my iPhone wordpress application. Currently it’s been an hour and 10 minutes since class supposedly started and the proff is no where to me seen.

Class officially ends in 40 minutes and if the prof arrives anytime now I doubt we’d be let go on time. -.-

**Update @11:15**
Professor showed up at 10:35 and managed to have a 10 minute class before we got kicked out because another class was about to start.

All moved in.

I am finally back at Humber Residence for another 8 months. Go to Humber at around 11-ish, went inside to get my room number, keys etc etc. Afterwards I went to the truck and started unloading my stuff into my new room. It took most of the day to unpack and set up my computer. It was delayed even further when I realized I left my screwdrivers and screws needed to remount my LCD monitors back onto its stand.

After all was done the day ended. Been bored in residence ever since. Walking around doing nothing, staying in my room listening to music, watching some shows. I went to Rogers to order the Hi-Speed Extreme Internet service to use during the school year since reznet is slow and is actively blocking torrents. That won’t come until Thursday, until then I am stuck using reznet on 1 machine.

This year I get to live in the bigger rooms, the suite style room. 2 bedrooms sharing 1 kitchenette and washroom. Better than last year, sharing a common washroom with everyone on the floor and no kitchen of any sort. My roommate is a friend I met last year who lived on the same hallway as I did.

I might post a picture of my room if I decide to take pictures of it.. lol

Until I get Rogers internet. I can’t log into AIM or Skype since apparently only MSN seems to be working.

Almost that time once again…

It’s almost time again to go back to school and for some odd reason I am actually looking forward to going back… :o

I move back into residence on the 24th of this month and will find out who my roommate is and what room number I have. But hopefully if my request is granted I should know who my roommate will be this year. I will be living in T building, suite style room with 2 rooms sharing 1 semi-private bathroom instead of S or R building where its dorm style room sharing 3 common washrooms.

My timetable for semester 3 is interesting to say the least with my least favorite day being Monday.

August Update

I now have a total of 3 22″ LCD Monitors. It originally started with a Sceptre 22″ then I got a BenQ 22″, now I have purchased a LG 22″ with a pivot and height adjustable stand. I have also gotten rid of the default monitor stand for the Sceptre monitor and replaced it with a monitor stand my dad brought home from work a few years back and it is now connected to my MacBook Pro in vertical mode. The LG and BenQ 22″ are the main displays of my main tower.

Also, I have replaced the Logitech MX3200 cordless keyboard combo with a Logitech diNovo EDGE bluetooth wireless keyboard and continuing to use my G9 wired mouse as my main mouse. So far this Logitech EDGE keyboard feels great and looks really cool! And its rechargable! :D

An updated screenshot of my Workstation as of today.

DSC01427

This of course is all about to change in 2 weeks since I move back into Humber residence on August 24th and all that is probably coming with me to residence. HAHA

and a Picture of my new keyboard

DSC01427

The only downside I can see right now with this keyboard is the fact it lacks a number pad, however it includes a cool circular trackpad which acts as a monitor so I can actually use this as a remote to control the computer from my bed. :) and I’ve gotten used to using laptops so I can live without a number pad.

I would post my current desktop screenshots of both the MacBook Pro and my desktop, however they go on a rotating wallpaper so the wallpaper changes every 5 minutes. hehe but my Main desktop has ObjectDock installed as well as DisplayFusion Pro which I actually paid 10 dollars for, so far the application is working pretty great. Going to play around with the hotkey features sometime next week when I no longer have to wake up early for work. :p
